David Solomon Biography
David Solomon’s fascination with wood as a medium began at a young age and has progressed through several stages of woodworking. Starting with the construction of functional furniture, Solomon progressed into making smaller, utilitarian pieces such as bookends and kitchen utensils. His woodworking then evolved into the creation of decorative wooden boxes and cutting boards.
Solomon’s boxes and boards are created from exotic hardwoods and burls combined with various types of maple. The wood is carefully selected for complimentary colours and patterns. These woods are often combined with focal pieces of spalted maple, crotch maple, and crotch ironwood, which are obtained from Solomon’s cottage on Manitoulin Island. Solomon spends many hours searching for the gnarliest sections on downed trees to yield the most beautiful accent pieces for his work.
His creations are both functional and decorative. The boxes can house treasured keepsakes, or they can become art pieces to accent the home. His work is displayed at the Perivale Gallery, the Quarters Gallery in Michigan, and the Art Gallery of Sudbury. His work has also been included in several juried art shows including Arts at the Dock, Wabi Sabi and the Sylvan Circle Tour, Muskoka Arts & Crafts Summer Show, and Artistry by the Lake.
