In Good Repair
October 22, 2004 - November 21, 2004
Opening reception: Friday October 22, 2004 – 7:00 p.m.
Workshop: Saturday October 23 & Sunday October 24
The Art Gallery of Sudbury is proud to present Dorothy Caldwell: In Good
Repair on Friday October 22, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. Caldwell an award winning
artist is presenting a series of new work inspired by her residency at the
Textile Museum of Canada where she studied artifacts from the Museum’s
historic collection.
Caldwell expands her characteristic rural landscape imagery of the last
decade into a study of representations. Her distinctive mark-making is created
by hand stitching and wax resist which captures natural phenomena such as the
prehistoric rock formations, ancient shorelines and preserved flora, of the
lakes and hillsides in Eastern Ontario’s Kawartha Lakes region.
“This is one of those rare exhibitions that takes
something so familiar that you hardly notice and makes something wonderful of
it. Dorothy’s inspirations build into rich painterly surfaces that meld the
accumulated marking of stitches and overlays of dyes into a metaphor of
landscape and time.”
Celeste Scopelities, Director/Curator
Also exhibited throughout Dorothy Caldwell: In Good Repair are several
fragile and mended textiles from the archives of the Textile Museum of Canada,
the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Peterborough Centennial Museum and
the artist’s own collection. These old and carefully repaired pieces of cloth
harmonize with Caldwell’s language of mark making. The artist pulls works in
deference to domestically prescribed utilitarian skills, and yet she pulls
them away from their private arena and symbolically places them into the
exterior work of the land.
Dorothy Caldwell live and works in Hastings, Ontario, and has held an
active studio practice for over 25 years. She has executed major architectural
commissions and her work is represented in many international private and
public collections. Dorothy represented Canada at Expo “90 in Osaka and was
the 1990 recipient of the prestigious Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellent in
the Crafts.
On Saturday October 23 and Sunday October 24, the Art Gallery of Sudbury
will be hosting a two-day workshop. Drawing with thread: the expressive stitch
will allow participants to learn about Caldwell’s unique approach to creating
textile art.
