There can be no doubt that Franklin Carmichael was passionate about the
landscape of Northern Ontario. This exhibition of his work reflects on his
experience in the northern region and captures the spirit of what makes it
distinct. Rhythmic forms of land and water, sky and cloud infuse the work with
the energy that Franklin must have felt as he painted plein-air. Selected
sketches are included in this exhibition, giving an intimate view into his
artistic process and personal experience within the region. Fully rendered oil
paintings and a selection of Carmichael’s renowned watercolours confirm his
connectedness to the land and contribution to Canadian art.
This year marks the 85th anniversary of the first exhibition of the
Group of Seven. The Art Gallery of Sudbury is celebrating along with 26
partnering public art galleries throughout Ontario. Please visit the Ontario
Association of Art Galleries' website to discover more on exhibitions across
