November 14, 2008 to January 11, 2009
Established in 2003 as a fundraising exhibition, Member's Choice offers a unique opportunity for our membership to “curate” the exhibition while supporting the Art Gallery of Sudbury! Our membership loves this peek into the permanent collection and so do we, so we have brought it back and have included new acquisitions and options for sponsorship!
Here's how it works…
By sponsoring a piece from our Permanent Collection you will help create the season's exhibition and see your chosen work on display at the Art Gallery of Sudbury. Levels of sponsorship are offered at $100, $250, $500 and $1000. We have pre-selected both historic and contemporary works that reflect a diversity of styles and mediums. The works are available for viewing on our website as of September 20 and in book format available at the gallery, or from an AGS Board Member.
If you sponsor a work...
Every level of sponsorship has a broad assortment of works to select from. Each sponsor will be recognized on the exhibition label and on our website. If you wish to remain anonymous, that's fine too! Corporations may have their logo posted on both the website and the exhibition label. The works will be installed in Gallery I & II on the basis of aesthetics.
Your support matters to us!
We invite our sponsors to attend the Sponsor's Preview Reception. This reception is to thank you for helping us meet our fundraising goals. As a sponsor, you and a guest will enjoy an evening of music, food, and of course, great art!
Sponsor's Preview Reception: Friday, November 14, 7:00 pm
What is the Permanent Collection?
The intention of a Permanent Collection is to keep locally and nationally important paintings and sculpture available for public access through exhibition and education programmes. The Art Gallery of Sudbury is a designated Class A collecting gallery. This is a status that is given by Cultural Properties, a department of Canadian Heritage. There are standards in professional practice that must be met however this status enables us to give tax receipts for donation of artwork. Once registered with Cultural Properties an artwork is protected as Canadian Cultural Heritage and rigid protocols must be met.
The Art Gallery of Sudbury was first established in 1967 as Laurentian University Museum and Art Centre and built a fine collection of Canadian Art over the years. A key donor was Ruth McCuaig who donated many major works in the collection. It is thanks to Ruth McCuaig that we have a wonderfully rich representation of Canadian art that includes works from the Group of Seven. As the Art Gallery of Sudbury, we continue to manage the Laurentian University Collection. We have also continued to collect as the Art Gallery of Sudbury. There are approximately 1500 works in the Laurentian University Collection and 350 in the AGS Collection. For Member's Choice we make the work available from both of these Permanent Collections.
Our future dream gallery would have space for an ongoing exhibition from the Permanent Collection! The Member's Choice fundraising exhibition helps us get closer to that goal.
