Aurora in Washington

Aurora
juillet 26, 2001 - septembre 02, 2001
Aurora brings together the work of four contemporary Finnish artists living in Helsinki and looks to various forms of light and the varied effects of illumination as its fundamental aesthetic and conceptual building blocks. With the Nordic countries so profoundly effected by light -- sometimes 24 hours of daytime in summer and often lengthy periods of darkness in winter months -- it is no wonder, consciously or otherwise, that these artists have chosen this area of exploration.
THE STORY IN SIX PARTS
juillet 06, 2001
This Northern Ontario program comprises six separate works of video art divided by 30 second animated sequences all engaging a central theme and created using a variety of styles. The program addresses notions, perceptions, histories and relationships around landscape. Each artist has interpreted this central theme within the conceptual framework defined by one of six headings Introduction, Inciting Incident, Rising Action, Climax, Denouement and Conclusion the requisite components of a story. Functioning as a videographic exquisite corpse, the participants were aware of each others' production activity but ultimately worked independently. This program brings together that breadth and diversity.

This exhibition brings together the work of seven artists sharing a fascination with portraiture. From high realism to pure abstraction, each employs a unique technique and particular aesthetic in examining their subjects. Although unified by a central theme, Human Remains is designed to accentuate the multitude of observations and derivations that can be made on the common portrait.
Off 17, on the verge
février 22, 2001 - avril 01, 2001
This exhibition presented a cross-section of work by senior and emerging artists working in a region from North Bay to Sault Sainte Marie. Incorporating work in a variety of media including painting, drawing, sculpture and installation, this exhibition showcased the vibrant art scene in North Eastern Ontario. Off 17, on the verge was the first exhibition presented in the newly renovated Art Gallery of Sudbury. In an effort to improve the quality of its exhibition spaces the facility was closed to the public for the month of January 2001. All galleries underwent retrofitting designed to greatly increase wall space, improve display lighting, enhance multi-media facilities and create an extensive resource centre.
