This project is the most comprehensive presentation and analysis
of the sculptural work of Sudbury artist Charles Paxy. Chronicling more than
fifty years of creative activity, the exhibition will include more than 100
pieces from the collections of Laurentian University, Art Gallery of Sudbury
and private lenders.
Paxy's
unique vision and aesthetic style predominantly explores the industrial
mechanics of the mining industry. Fashioned from locally harvested basswood,
the work uses gestures both intimate and grand. His cross-sectional
constructions detail heavy equipment and situations of massive excavation
while single figure tableaus portray the cycles of human activity.
Paxy is a local artist, his sculptures depict an important part of
our community the mining industry and its workers. Paxy is a native of
Hungary who settled with his family in Sudbury in 1952. He was employed by
Inco for a quarter century and in his early years, Paxy was in military school
in Budapest where he developed his wood carving skills.
