The Art Gallery of Sudbury is pleased to announce an upcoming exhibition of photographic work by Jana Sterbak. Entitled Photopractice, the exhibition is scheduled to take place 17 October to 9 February, 2003 and will open with a public reception Thursday 17 October beginning at 7pm.

Sterbak is an internationally renowned artist working primarily in installations, integrating objects, film and video. Her extensive body of work includes a number of very significant and highly acclaimed pieces. One of Sterbak’s best known works is Vanitas, Flesh Dress for an Albino Anorexic (1987) – an installation comprising a dress fashioned from raw beefsteak displayed on a dressmaker’s dummy.

For two decades, she has exhibited extensively in Canada, the United States and Europe. A number of retrospectives of her work have already been mounted, including those at the National Gallery of Canada (1991), the Tapies Foundation (1995, Barcelona), the Serpentine Gallery (1996, London) and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago (1998). The Haus der Kunst in Munich, a major modern and contemporary art gallery, is presenting a retrospective of the artist’s work until the end of September 2002 – this exhibition was presented earlier in 2002 at Malmö Konstall (Sweden). The Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal is currently preparing a retrospective of her work scheduled to begin February 2003. Sterbak will also be Canada’s official representative at the 2003 Venice Biennale, one of the most prestigious international exhibitions of contemporary art. Her work is represented in a number of private and public collections. Sterbak was born 1955 in Prague (the former Czechoslovakia). Since 1968 she has lived in Canada New York and Paris – now dividing her time between Montréal and Barcelona, Spain.
