Opening Reception: Thursday July 15 – 7 p.m.
Location: Art Gallery of Sudbury – Gallery 1 and grounds
Artist’s Talk: Thursday July 15 – 6 p.m.
The Art Gallery of Sudbury presents an exhibition of sculptural works by
artist Lyn Carter and Carl Taçon entitled Skin Deep in
which the idea of skin or surface is explored conceptually.
The skin bounding an object, body, or space is a momentary pause between
sometimes vastly different worlds. Stone and cloth figure differently in this
light. One speaks of buildings and façades, the other has the soft touch of
the body, though each envelops. The fascination, magic and mystery of any
material entity is the curiosity of what lies within and beyond the surface.
But surface can be deceptive. It appears to define what it contains yet often
belies the true nature of its interior. Carter and Taçon are both attracted to
the shifting guise that the notion of surface of “skin” has to offer. Engaging
this elusive quality makes apparent a place of disjuncture between the
tangible and that which is imagined.
