Gallery I
Love and War
Andrew Morrow
Opening reception: Thursday, June 14, 7 to 9 p.m. Artist Talk precedes at 6:30 p.m.
The Art Gallery of Sudbury is pleased to bring attention to this young
Canadian painter who references historic war painting and classical animation,
combining these with contemporary imagery to create works that astound with
their ambitious content. Utilizing traditional oil painting techniques, these
monumental scenes are built with layers of images from diverse times, place
and subject. They manage to reflect a sense of what we feel in our daily life
as we are bombarded with information and visuals that sometimes repel but most
often embroil us within the turmoil.
Artist Statement
My current work depicts an aesthetic of violence, or more accurately perhaps, the energy implicit to violence. This energy, as portrayed in my paintings, has more to do with its potential for beauty and physicality than it does with acts of aggression or abuse. Sometimes using historical war painting as a starting point, I draw on images from a wide variety of sources, depicting many separate violent moments in time, combined to create an entirely fictional scenario of battle, or chaos. My subject matter lends itself best to densely-composed, large-scale canvasses. While earlier works depicted only war, I have recently been introducing images relating to love, as a counterpoint, but also as a visual parallel to the violence in my paintings.
The exhibition at the Art Gallery of Sudbury features a
collection of painting and lithography, ranging from 5”x7” to 8’x16’.
Additionally, there is a three-dimensional sculpture built in the tradition of
museological habitat dioramas. It depicts the fierce, energetic demise of a
massive, conjoined polar bear at the hands of a team of snow-camouflaged
soldiers. This piece is a collaborative project, produced with Toronto
artist, Christy Langer, who is represented by Katharine Mulherin Contemporary
Art Projects. All works are courtesy of The Edward Day Gallery.

Learn the art of Direct painting, or Alla Prima, practiced by masters such as
John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, and many landscape, portrait and still life
painters today. This technique is one of the most immediate approaches to
painting and often results in finished works in just one session, without the
use of mediums, glazing or multiple stages. Through learning the fundamentals
of drawing, composition, values, edges, colour and light, and brushwork,
students will be taught how to faithfully translate subjects into vibrant
paintings. In addition to painting from life, students will also study works
by other artists in an effort to better understand their methods, and in order
to apply it to the course content. Please join Andrew Morrow, an accomplished
Toronto-based painter, for a relaxed, but highly informative approach to
creating dynamic, realistic paintings.
